HARESFINCH Park is set for a mini makeover, thanks to the efforts of two primary school children.

Zak, 10, and Molly Mulcahy, six, from St Peter and St Paul RC Primary School in Haresfinch, wrote to their ward councillor saying the small roundabout by the park - on Green Leach Lane - looked "dirty and a bit boring".

Councillor Jeff Fletcher received the youngsters' letter and a meeting was arranged, where the children, accompanied by mum Mel, handed over two designs, outlining how they thought the roundabout should look. The plans included shrubs and large planters.

"I was very impressed with the plans," said Cllr Fletcher, "But it later became clear that there were one or two safety issues with installation and maintenance. So we managed to reach a compromise - with a planter that will be placed at the entrance to the park opposite the roundabout.

"I was really delighted that Zak and Molly cared enough about their area to put their ideas forward - and also with the support they and the council received from the school."

With the help of classmates and council funding, the brother and sister had a planter placed opposite the roundabout.

Council rangers helped to take things a step further by inviting Zak's classmates, along with Molly, to the park to help plant some wild flower seeds. They also gave a talk about wild flowers and how they help the environment - and presented them with digital cameras to record local flora and fauna.

The Councillor Improvement Fund sees each ward given around £15,000 a year to spend on projects suggested by residents.
