THE mayor and Conor McGinn MP joined former miners for the launch of a fascinating exhibition at the World of Glass.

'When the Pit Closed' is the creation of photographer Alan Smith, from Rainford, and was unveiled at the World of Glass to mark 25 years since Sutton Manor Colliery closed down.

The exhibition uses words, music and black and white photos to portray the impact the closure in 1991 had on 10 ex-miners and what has happened to each of them since.

Alf Houghton, 89, who began work at Sutton Manor in 1955 launched the exhibition at the museum on Saturday (January 16).

Conor McGinn MP and mayor of St Helens Cllr Steve Glover were also present.

Mr McGinn said: “I thoroughly enjoyed the exhibition, it is well worth a visit.

“The combination of pictures, words and music tells the individual journeys of each of the miners following the closure of the pit."

The exhibition will run until March 18.
