ONE of the town centre's most iconic pubs has reopened under a new identity.

Brewer Gary Wright has taken over the former Sportsmans Inn, on Duke Street, renaming it The Talbot Ale House.

The venue was packed out as its rebrand was launched with the pub opening for business from November 21.

"I decided I wanted to take a pub on and I could see an opportunity with the Sportsmans that wasn't been played on," said Gary, 36, of Rainford-based George Wright brewery.

"It's one of the most traditional pubs in our town and it has got so much history, especially Saints-wise.

"I just felt it needed some TLC to get it back to what it should be. I've tried to keep it as traditional and as comfortable as possible."

The pub has been offering the 'Man of Steel' ale, brewed by George Wright in honour of the late Steve Prescott.

"I found a lot of Saints memorabilia from old days which have gone back on the walls.

"The place hasn't lost any customers, and it's a gradual growth which is what we want."
