It's showtime in Newton

The yearly family fun event, hosted by the Newton and Earlestown Community Group, takes place this Saturday (August 1) in Mesnes Park.

Entry to the show is free and any donations and proceeds collected at the event go towards the following year's event and funding school and community projects in Newton-le-Willows.

The show includes an appearance by two military 'Huey' helicopters, segway rallying, a trial bike display, classic cars and a steam traction engine.

There will also be a funfair, zipwires, birds of prey, arts and crafts, a samba dancing performance and entertainment from brass bands.

Andy Hargreaves, of Newton and Earlestown Community Group, said: "We will be having some favourites again, alongside new and exciting attractions.

"There will be local musicians and dance groups, and a Punch and Judy show.

"We've also lined up a range of new attractions such as the helicopters and a segway rally.

"We are sure that everyone will find something to enjoy."

The Huey helicopter was widely used to transport injured soldiers from the frontline during the Korean War and the United States' war with Vietnam.

Councillor Seve Gomez-Aspron, chairman of the organising committee, said: "The day is set to be brilliant. Come rain or shine, show your support."

The show opens at 11am, with the helicopters flying in between 10.15 and 10.45am. According to organisers, the best view of the helicopters will be obtained from the footpath from Birley Street to Mesnes Park.

Cllr Gomez-Aspron thanked local businesses Parkside Regeneration, THINK!, Marklands, Gentlemans Social and Taylor Wimpey and Rotary for their support.
