EMERGENCY services have been called to Haydock Island following a road accident involving three vehicles.

A Nissan ended up on its roof following the collision on the East Lancashire Road which also involved a Volkswagen and a Fiat Punto. 

The fire service rescued a woman in her 50s from the upturned Nissan and she has been taken to Whiston Hospital. 

Her injuries are not thought to be life-threatening. 

Both the Nissan and Volkswagen have been lifted away from the scene.

The collision took place shortly before 2pm. 

No other injuries are believed to have occurred from the accident.

The area has now been cleared by the Highway Agency.
