THE town's MPs have called for the career of retired Saints' legend Paul Wellens to be recognised in parliament.

St Helens South and Whiston MP Marie Rimmer is the primary sponsor of an early day motion, with St Helens North's Conor McGinn adding his support.

The motion was created to honour the career of the former Saints skipper who made 495 appearances for the club and went on to be capped by Great Britain and England 31 times.

He won five league titles, five Challenge Cups and two World Club Challenges in his career, lifting the Super League trophy as captain at last year's Grand Final against Wigan.

His career, which spanned 18 seasons, was brought to an end due to a chronic hip injury.

Conor McGinn said: “This early day motion in Westminster recognises Paul’s achievements on the field and his legendary status in St Helens.

"Saints is at the heart of our community and in turn Paul has been at the heart of the club for 18 years.

"He is a great ambassador for the club, his sport and the town, and will be for many years to come. I’m glad to be able to recognise that in Parliament and wish Paul and his family well for the future.”
