FOUR people who were arrested in connection with a targeted shooting in Whiston on Friday (April 10) have been bailed.

A 24-year-old local man remains in critical condition in hospital after he was shot while he was in a VW Passat. Police believe the shots were fired during a high speed chase between a Passat and a dark coloured Audi through residential estates just after 6pm.

Detectives say it was "only by luck" an innocent bystander wasn't caught in the crossfire.

It is understood that the cars were driven out of Lyneham at speed along Driveway and into Copperwood Drive where further shots were fired.

The Passat, which had damage to the rear window, was later found outside the accident and emergency department at Whiston Hospital.

Three men, one aged 21 and two aged 22 from Whiston were arrested in connection with them being in the Passat. A 17-year-old from Huyton was arrested nearby a short time later.

Another man, aged 21, who was also in the Passat was injured but his injuries are not described as serious.
