CANDIDATE lists for the two St Helens constituencies at the general election have been announced, while it has also been confirmed that a hustings event will be taking place next Friday where the public can put forward questions to them.

There are no surprises on the lists, confirmed last night by St Helens Council, as the major parties had been vocal in announcing their candidates over the past month but the official confirmation may add impetus to what has so far been a low key local campaign ahead of polling day on May 7.

The dissolution of parliament marked the end of the political careers for serving MPs Shaun Woodward and Dave Watts, meaning St Helens South and Whiston and St Helens North will see new MPs elected.

Both seats in St Helens have been Labour strongholds for generations and bookmakers are making them strong favourites to win again in May.

St Helens Interchurch Network (SHINE) is sponsoring an election hustings event on Friday, April 17, 7.30pm at St Helens Parish Church. Candidates from St Helens North and South will be represented.

Members of the public will be able to submit questions on arrival.

The event will close at 9.30pm.
