PLANNING applications to build Co-operative convenience stores at two locations in the borough have been withdrawn.

NewRiver Retail had submitted plans to build a shop near to the Brown Edge Hotel, in Thatto Heath and on a car park of the Stag Hotel, in Garswood in November.

But during public consultation numerous objections were received, with objections including noise and traffic issues.

One letter to St Helens Council read: “There is absolutely no need for another convenience store in Garswood, the stores we have serve the community amply, they also employ local people.”

Meanwhile, traffic and parking were highlighted in opposition to the Thatto Heath development.

An objection to the council stated: “Quite clearly the proposal impacts significantly on numerous domestic properties and the several commercial businesses surrounding the designated site.

“We have major concerns with the proposed development particularly with the increase in levels of litter, noise and light pollution, the totally inadequate and poorly designed car parking provision and design relative to deliveries and access to the store not to mention the potentially dramatic increase in on-road parking adjacent to the store.”

It is understood the applicants are seeking further talks with the council with the possibility of new applications being submitted.

Councillor Stephen Glover, chair of the planning committee, said: "The applications have both been withdrawn and the applicants have asked to see the council again.

"Objections related to noise issues and for the Brown Edge proposal there were more complicated traffic issues."
