A MAN who arms himself with a large knife is believed to be behind a robbery and two attempted robberies in St Helens stores over the past two months.

Detectives today appealed over the spree which date back to December 3 when a man walked into the Londis store on Dunriding Lane armed with what appeared to be a large hunting knife.

He threatened staff before escaping with cash from the till.

Just over a month later, on Friday, January 9 at around 1.50pm, a man walked into the same shop armed with a similar knife to the one used in the initial robbery.

He demanded cash from staff, but they refused to hand anything over and he ran off empty handed.

A week later, on Friday,  January 16, at around 6.05pm, a man walked into the Londis shop on Haverty Precinct, Bradlegh Road in Newton-le-Willows.

He appeared to be armed with a knife which was partly hidden in his jacket pocket.  The offender demanded cash but once again the assistant refused and the man left the store.

Detective Inspector Martin Earl, St Helens CID, said: "We believe that the same offender is responsible for all three incidents and we are determined to trace and arrest him.

"He's described as white, aged in his early 20s, around 5ft 10in to 6ft tall and of a slim build.  He spoke with a local accent.

"I would urge anyone who recognises the description or has any information about these incidents to get in touch with us as soon as possible."
