COMMUNITY hero Angela Metcalfe says that her award is down to the generosity of the people of St Helens.

Angela is the project director at The Hope Centre, one of the organisations behind the St Helens Foodbank, which relies on local government funding, trust funds and contributions from volunteers as it aims to help the community "one person at a time".

Its aim is to help people who have problems relating to drug and alcohol use, domestic violence or personal debts, and along with support and guidance is the food bank provision.

Angela has helped the organisation to donate more than 19,600 kg of food to the community.

And, after being named winner of the Community Hero award, Angela dedicated it to her team of volunteers and the people of the town. “This is a team effort and I collect this on behalf of the team of more than 80 volunteers that I work with,” said Angela after receiving her award.

“Without the help, support and generosity of the community of St Helens we wouldn’t be able to get the food out and reach the people that we need to.

“It’s a privilege to serve here with the team and to support St Helens.”

Chris O’Dea, of award sponsors ODs Designer Clothing, who handed Angela the award added: “It is an honour to be asked to present this award and I am very proud of Angela winning this tonight.”
