FORMER Star editor Steve Leary was named the 2014 Pride of St Helens winner after more than four decades representing the people of his home town.

Boasting a 40 year career in journalism, 22 of which were spent as editor, Steve, from Rainford, was quick to praise the people of St Helens as he accepted his award.

Steve, 65, who retired earlier this year, admitted to feeling “raw emotion” on the night said: “Winning the Pride of St Helens award was an unexpected finale to my 40 years at the Star.

To receive this accolade at the ceremony which celebrates all the amazing things St Helens people do was an immense honour for me.

“Listening to the stories of all the other category nominees demonstrated yet again what a special place our town is and that the Pride awards really shout out the achievements of our heroes young and old.

“There can't have been a dry eye in the house when the evening opened with a film tribute to the courage of Steve Prescott. Steve's raw determination to get on with life and battle his way through the most challenging obstacles will continue to inspire generations for many years to come. He certainly inspired me and the rest of the Star team!”
