FIREFIGHTERS spent almost five hours tackling a blaze after bales of hay were deliberately torched in a field.
Crews from Newton and Whiston were called to land off Gorsey Lane in Clock Face at around 8.30pm yesterday.
They left the scene at around 1.30am.
Watch Manager Ian Mullen Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service arson reduction coordinator said: "If a fire appliance is attending a deliberate fire it may delay the response to other emergencies.
"Grass fires and rubbish fires can spread quickly and get out of control.
"We investigate all fires we are called to and pass information on to the police. Deliberately setting fires on grass land and open spaces is arson and those caught will be prosecuted."
