THE search is on to establish the identity of a St Helens Recs match reporter in the 1930s known as the ‘Colonel.’

Saints historian Alex Service will be holding the last of his open days for relatives of Recs players between 1919 and 1939 to attend and receive a certificate at the Local History Library, on Victoria Square on Wednesday, October 8 between 10am and 7pm.

“There are a couple of things still to be resolved,” says Alex.

“There was a guy who did some brilliant match reports in the 1930s called 'The Colonel’ but does anyone know who his real name?

“Also, I don’t have a portrait image of front-rower Bill Liptrot, who played for Lancashire on a number of occasions.”

Alex will use the information gathered in a book of biographies to be called They Bled Red, Amber and Black. Alex can be contacted 01744 756135.
