AN ASPIRING medical student received a dose of inspiration from the Shadow Secretary of State for Health Andy Burnham when he paid a visit to his college.

The MP gave a keynote speech at Winstanley College on Wednesday, September 17 on his vision for the future of health and social care to prospective medic, dentist and vet students.

The visit formed part of the college’s Medics, Dentists and Vets (MDV) day.

And among the audience of students listening to the speech was 17-year-old Will Poole, a second year student who wants to go on to study medicine.

Will, a former Rainford High pupil, is currently studying for his A Levels in biology, maths, chemistry, and physics.

“I think the college’s MDV programme is essential in preparing students for their future career,” said Will, from Haresfinch.

“It ensures that we are constantly kept up-to-date with the latest industry developments and get the work experience vital to gaining a place on such competitive degree courses.”

The day also included practical workshops in First Aid and advice and guidance from former Winstanley students who are now studying for degrees within the professions.

Biology teacher, Dave Woods, who coordinates the MDV programme, summed up the day saying: “I think the fantastic turnout and attitude of our students today instils confidence that our future health is in safe hands.”

Before giving his speech Andy commented: ‘’I hope to get across the importance of the NHS and how lucky these future medics are to have the chance to work for the best healthcare service in the world.”
