THREE Pilkingtons workers are preparing for a gruelling physical challenge, as they ready themselves to take on the Ironman UK event.

The trio will take on the formidable three-event test taking place round parts of Lancashire on Sunday, July 20.

It includes a 2.4 mile swim, a 112-mile cycle and culminates in a marathon run that finishes in old, historic Bolton.

Forty-five-year-old senior technologist Mark Glynn is undertaking the challenge for the first time, having taken part in marathons in recent years.

Joining him will be colleague Mike Fairclough, 49, from Rainford, and John Moran, 46, who is employed at the Greengate works.

“I have been a runner for a few years and did a marathon each year, finally breaking my target of three hours after seven years,” said Mark, from Eccleston.

“Last year I went to watch Ironman UK, and it’s a bigger challenge than the marathon.

“We’re getting there with our preparation – so long as we don’t break anything between now and then!”

As well as taking on the gruelling physical challenge, the colleagues will also be helping to raise funds for Scope, a partner charity of the event, which works to help give disabled people the same opportunities as everyone else.

It is a cause that Mark relates to, as his 17-year-old daughter Ellie suffers from learning difficulties.

“It’s the partner charity for the event, but my oldest daughter Ellie has learning difficulties.

“She relies on other people and needs help and support each day. But there are so many other people that don’t get that support, so any donations would be greatly appreciated” he added.

Between them, the three aim to raise £3,000 for the charity.
