Gilbert & Sullivan singers widen their appeal

St Helens Star: St Helens Singers hope to reach a wider audience. St Helens Singers hope to reach a wider audience.

A SINGING group that has been part of the entertainment scene for over 80 years has moved up a key.

St Helens Gilbert & Sullivan Society has performed operettas and concerts around town and further afield raising funds for charity but now the Society has changed its name and launched The St Helens Singers.

“We will be offering a much wider repertoire and be concentrating on staging concerts,” explained Singers’ secretary Marie Holden.

“The aim is to foster the enjoyment of singing in four-part harmony with an exciting and varied repertoire, encompassing songs from West End shows, country and classical yet maintaining a link to its Gilbert & Sullivan roots.

Those who enjoy singing are invited to an open evening on Monday, May 12, starting at 7.45 pm at the Baptist Church, in Hall Street, St Helens. Visitors can listen and sing along with all voices welcome.

The Singers are preparing for a September concert in St Helens Town Hall to commemorate the beginning of the First World War.
