Labour to select St Helens South and Whiston candidate on Sunday

MEMBERS of the Labour Party will meet this Sunday to decide who will be selected to succeed Shaun Woodward as their candidate to fight in the next General Election.

Star readers will be able to keep in touch with the latest developments via sthelensstar.co.uk.

Following meetings held by local Labour Party members, former council leader Marie Rimmer, London-based councillor Catherine McDonald and June Hitchen, a councillor in Manchester, will face a final ballot.

Labour members for St Helens South and Whiston will meet in Thatto Heath.

There, the three candidates – each chosen from an all-woman shortlist – will state their political priorities should they suceed, in a ten-minute speech.

Next, they will take part in a question and answer session before the final vote takes place.

Rimmer, 67, who lost out to Woodward when he was parachuted into the constituency in 2001, has been tipped as the front runner.

That's the way it is get used to it.

There is no democratic process in St. Helens it's a North Korean sweep labour rule every aspect of St. Helens in the hands of a few individuals who share the spoils. Ultimately it's the fault of the electorate who for many years have voted labour even though for decades it has no longer represented them or low paid working people.

Over time it creates the situation we have now where a few unscrupulous people exploit the situation

if you really want to make a statement, dont vote at all. but dont sit at home. visit the polling stations in may and spoil your ballot paper, they are recorded as such.

why would i suggest such a thing, when it is our right, our influence with a vote that makes a difference. well, it doesnt, who you vote for locally / nationally is going to make no difference at all. People have fought and died for the vote, yes they have, and if those people were around to day and say the people who stand up as leaders and say "vote for me" they would be shocked, outraged, appalled.

they have not EARNT our vote.

Terence McKenna, someone way more intellgent than I once said

"We are led by the least among us – the least intelligent, the least noble, the least visionary"

and I suspect that to be very true!

Labour members have a right to select whoever they feel to be the next Labour parliamentary candidate for St helens South and Whiston. However, its a sad reflection when St Helens needs new ideas, imagination, and a different set of eyes looking at things they go for a person who has absolutely none of the aforementioned.
There's lots of people of a left wing persuasion as well who won't be voting Labour because of her. I'm one of them and not the only one.
