MOURNERS turned out to say their farewells at the funeral of respected retailer Ian Wilkinson.

The congregation filled Nicholas Church in Sutton as family members, friends and former business associates turned out to pay their respects to Ian who passed away in February, aged 64, after battling cancer.

Rev Ken Friar delivered an emotional service, which included Ian’s daughter Kate giving a eulogy and readings from Ian’s cousin Moira Myers and friend David Hoult.

Pharmacist Ian opened the original ‘Mr Thrifty’ store in 1983 and retired in 2010.

Maureen, Ian’s wife of 42 years, said: “To see so many people taking the time to honour Ian’s memory by attending his service was very humbling for my girls and myself.

“We would like to thank all our family and friends for the support they have given us both during Ian’s short illness and since his death.”

The family are still receiving cards, flowers and donations to Diabetes UK and Cancer Research UK.
