A COUPLE aged in their 90s had to be rescued by firefighters after their car ended up in a ditch in a field just off the East Lancs road last night (Tuesday, January 14).
Crews from Eccleston and Whiston were called at around 8.40pm to Windle Island near Houghtons Lane.
They helped the 90-year-old woman out of the car which was on all four wheels in a dry ditch.
The driver who is 91 was helped by police and taken to Whiston Hospital. It is believed he was suffering from the effects of hypothermia.
The woman was also taken to Whiston where she was treated for shock.
