A SUPERCHEF enjoyed a special ‘wok placement’ with schoolchildren in Rainhill on Monday, when Sam Yau turned their classroom into a Cantonese kitchen.
Hong Kong-trained Sam brought a flavour of the Orient to St Ann’s CE Primary as part of a Year 3 study of Liverpool and its historical Chinese connection.
Sam, head chef at Pacifica Cantonese in St Helens, previously worked in Paris and London where he cooked for stars such as Barbara Streisand, Mick Jagger and Frank Sinatra. Today he was hoping to inspire a new generation of chefs to cook for the stars of tomorrow.
Headteacher Rebecca Wilkinson said: “It’s not every day a former Michelin-starred chef brings his kitchen into your classroom. Sam prepared a typically healthy Cantonese dish to share with the whole class – it was absolutely mouth-watering.
“We’re really grateful to Sam for coming along to help bring our children’s learning to life in such a special way. Studying Liverpool and its historical Chinese connection is one thing – today they were able to experience it and taste it too.”
Liverpool is home to Europe’s first established Chinatown, the entrance to which is marked by the biggest Chinese arch outside China.
