ARE you old enough to remember street gas lamps and kids swinging from ropes tied to the bar the lamplighter would rest his ladder against?

Ian Bonnell from Billinge has been in touch with these evocative old snaps. He said: "My dad took these pictures in the early 70s. I wasn't sure where they were until I put them on Facebook a few weeks ago.

"The 'St Helens Back in the Day' crowd put me right though. Although I'm still not sure about the Campbell Street one though. My dad reckoned they were the last gas lamps in the town. I don't know if he was right or not but I thought I'd share them.

"I found the photos while rummaging through old albums at my parents' house. My dad had no real connection to the area other than he was a regular visitor to Casey Brothers army surplus shop on Boundary Road.

"He says he took the pictures because he'd seen a competition in a magazine to find and photograph Britain's oldest lamppost and remembered those in the back streets around there.

"He couldn't believe he didn't win."

Do you have any photos of lamps in your street later than 1973?
