THIS picture shows Stephenson’s Cottage near the bottom of Emmitt’s Brow, which reader Nick Coleman refers to in his comments in the story about Newton lock (right).
Emmitt was the boss of the Viaduct works, certainly around the time of the outbreak of the First World War.
In the foreground is what was known as Stephenson’s Cottage as he rented it and lived there while they were building the Nine Arches, the Sankey Viaduct, from about 1828.
