DAVID Lyon writes: “After reading your piece about the Whiston locomotive that was at Bold Colliery I thought I would give you a few more facts.
“The loco was unnamed when it went from Whiston to Bold. Terry Tabers who was a fitter at the colliery painted it green and named it Whiston. Terry, who is a St Helens lad, currently lives in Garswood.
“Teddy Greenall was the driver and Harry (Nucky) Woods was the brakeman. I was lucky to spend the first year of my apprenticeship in the loco shed and stood on the foot plate on many occasions in the late 60s.
“I even climbed into the fire box, which was unlit, to help terry change a fuseable plug. This is plug is full of solder and melts if the water gets too low.”
Best regards Dave Lyon (ex Peasley Cross currently Haresfinch).
