THE Townships Family History Society 'help and workshop' evenings are held at the Local History and Archive Library, 1st floor, Central Library, Victoria Square on Tuesdays between 3.45pm and 6.45pm.

The Eccleston Smithy Heritage Centre is open every weekend until September 14 between 1pm and 4pm and admission is free. The current exhibition is 'Murder Most Foul'.

Meanwhile on Friday, August 22 the Friends of the Theatre Royal are hosting a quiz evening in the Circle Bar at the theatre at 7.30pm. Entry is £5. Contact Enid Pennington on 0151 426 6180.

On Wednesday, August 27 Newton-le-Willows History Group pay a visit to St Peter's Church.
