Dave Price tells me he was at the National Railway Museum at York last October for the 75th anniversary of Mallard’s record breaking run up the East coast main line where it steamed to a record 126 miles per hour.

He told me: “While there I was lucky enough to meet John Anthony who drove steam trains allocated to Sutton Oak sheds in Baxter’s Lane. He later moved to Skipton, where he was lucky enough to drive Mallard.

“The museum invited crews who had driven Mallard to attend the gathering and I had a chat to him and took some pictures of him with the famous locomotive.

“I am pleased to say that one of the steam locos allocated to Sutton Oak is still working in preservation. Number 76079 was built at Horwich works in 1958 and spent all bar six months at the end of steam at Sutton, later moving to Springs Branch, Wigan. It is now working on the North Yorks Moors Railway.”
