PROPOSED works to ensure a bank building in the town centre does not ‘fall into a state of disrepair’ have been submitted.

An application for listed building consent for the ‘like for like’ decoration of the main facade of HSBC, on Bridge Street, has been submitted.

According to the design, access and heritage statement, due to general weathering and deterioration, the facade of the building ‘requires attention’.

It says the proposal is to fully redecorate the external facade with 'like for like paint specifications' – while the downpipes, windows and railings would also be redecorated in 'like for like' paint.

It adds: “The architectural & historical interest of this building is significant considering its age, location & architectural detailing.

“The site is a significant asset to the surrounding area as it holds a prominent presence on Bridge Street. The Grade II listed building is sited within a conservation area.

“The architectural character and appearance is typical of banks of this and earlier periods, signifying solidity and respectability relating to the building’s use.

“The works, as a whole, are to ensure this building does not fall into a state of disrepair and keep a positive appearance down the historic and busy Bridge Street.

“We believe the proposed works will respect the buildings original features and will not have a negative impact on the building or the surrounding area.”
