A MAN has admitted trying to murder his girlfriend after she suffered serious burns in a house fire.

Andrew Braithwaite, 51, from Haydock had been due to stand trial this summer but today (May 3) changed his plea to guilty.

Catherine Wilcock, 44, was taken to hospital with serious injuries after firefighters were called to a blaze at their home on Johns Avenue in Haydock on February 11 this year.

In a hearing at Liverpool Crown Court Braithwaite, spoke only to confirm his personal details and enter his plea.

Anya Horwood, prosecuting, asked for the sentence to be adjourned to allow up to date information about Ms Wilcock's medical condition and a victim personal statement to be obtained.

Judge Alan Conrad QC remanded Braithwaite in custody until Monday, May 23.
