As we are getting into the winter months, we are starting to feel the cold. Many of us are turning on our heating to combat the freeze, but there are better, more sustainable ways.

Turning on the heating uses large amounts of gas and electricity, which is destroying our environments with large amounts of emissions.

As well as that many of us are starting to feel the pinch of the Cost of Living crisis, and the winter fuel cap isn't going to get much better.

But it doesn't have to be this way...

Some lesser things you can do:

  1. Put a jumper on, this will keep you warm without having to use any of our natural resources.
  2. Use an electric blanket, this doesn't use as much gas as the central heating, and doesn't release as much Carbon in the air either.
  3. Have a small wood fire, putting wood in your fireplace allows you to heat up the house without using gas for fuel, and it produces a lot less Carbon Dioxide than an electric fire.
  4. Use a hot water bottle, using hot water allows you to heat yourself up without wasting heating on places where you won't be, only heating up what's needed.
  5. Close the doors, this blocks those nasty drafts from getting in from the outside and for the inside, allows each room to heat up quicker as they only have to heat up the small space rather than the larger area caused by an open door.

Some larger things you can do include:

  1. Installing double glazing for your windows, This allows you to retain the heat already in the house, allowing your house to stay warmer for longer
  2. Install insulation, this has the same principle as double glazing, yet on a much larger scale, allowing not only the areas around the windows to stay warm, but the rest of your house too.
  3. Install a smart meter, this allows you to keep track of the temperature and can turn it off when not needed, allowing you to save both money and resources.

Wether you're feeling the pinch or just want to help the environment, there's always something you can do to help this winter.
