DOMINIKA Jedrzejczak opened her first salon two years ago but quickly outgrew the space and needed bigger premises.

Her business has continued to grow and Dominika Nails St Helens is still thriving in Golden Beauty by Dominika.

Here, in our latest Meet The Salon Owner, Dominika tells us how she’d always dreamed of owning her own salon and why customers love visiting her College Street salon.

I opened this salon in February this year.

Has it always been in the same location?

In December 2021, I opened my first salon on West Street - Golden Beauty by Dominika. But within three months, I knew I need bigger place because it was too small. I felt I could do something more and want to grow the business so after a year I moved.

Are you local to the area? Did you grow up here?

I actually come from Poland but I feel like I have spent at least half my life in St Helens. I have been here for more than 10 years. I definitely feel like a local!

What do you do? What services do you provide?

I have more than 10 years’ experience working in the beauty industry. I am a licensed nail technician. I have completed several courses and I am proud of what I have achieved through hard work. I am a multi award winner, winning lots of competitions and I have many trophies and certificates. My last big trophy was for International Nail Technician of the Year. I have been nominated for several other awards, which I’m very proud of.

Another of my babies is my own brand of gel polish. I’m so excited and proud of myself. You can buy Golden by Dominika products in my salon.

In the salon, we offer nails and hair as well as eyelash extensions and eyelash lifts, eyebrow tints and wax and eyebrow lamination. We also do facial treatments and body treatments and we’re hoping to add more to our list.

Why did you decide to open your own salon?

I started working in a small room at home but over time I started running out of walls for certificates and space for new products. I knew I wouldn't develop any further if I stayed at home. I decided to open a salon and found a small, quiet place not far from home and that's how my first beauty salon was created. I remember like it was yesterday - I had only two days to make the property look like a beauty salon so it was a real challenge. After a year, I moved to St Helens town centre and now my business is growing by the day.

Why this type of business?

Nails has always been my passion. I love having my nails done and my adventure started when I was in Poland. When my husband and I decided to come to England, I knew that I wanted to do nails. Someone once said that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life and this is so true.

Were you open before/during/after the Covid-19 pandemic? How did this affect your business?

When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, the world froze and I think it was a shock for all of us, especially in the beauty industry. I used the free time to become even better and took several online courses. When I opened the salon in December 2021, the pandemic was still happening and we weren’t sure if we’d have to close salons again. But luckily, we got over it and everything has slowly returned to normal.

What makes your business different to others in the same area/field?

I think it is very important in the beauty sector to have a high standard of compliance with workplace hygiene and work tools. Each tool is always properly sterilised and the workplace is disinfected after each client. The work we do is at the highest level - we continue to develop, train and improve our qualifications, and this can be missing in some salons. Of course, what sets us apart is the relationship between our team members, but most importantly, with our clients. Customers can relax with good cup of coffee or tea, listen to good music and have a chat. We always say that whatever happens in Golden Beauty, stays in Golden Beauty.

What sets your business apart from your competitors?

I think that we stand out from the competition and the appearance of the showroom proves it. In our salon, it is always clean and, above all, it is not another pink salon. I really wanted to be unique and each of us is an artist, so you will definitely see this in our work. We are constantly expanding our knowledge and skills and we follow trends closely. We do not close ourselves off to new people - we are happy to invite everyone in for an appointment.

Why do loyal clients return to your business?

Customers come back because they are satisfied with the standard of service that we provide in the salon. They feel at ease with us and they always say that they don't want to leave, which makes us very happy. We always put comfort and customer satisfaction first!

What’s next? What do the next few months hold for you and your salon?

I hope in the future to be able to teach people how to be professional in our industry. I’d love to continue to expand the business and grow the brand. Who knows, maybe I will open another shop with my products or even another salon.
