PLANS have been sent in seeking permission for the installation of a 50-seater stand and standing cover area at a sports club site used by a football club.

Windleshaw Sports Club on Windleshaw Road, Dentons Green, the home of FC St Helens has undergone renovations over recent years.

The site hosted the first-ever league fixture, played in the first-ever senior rugby competition in the Northern counties in 1889.

From the early 1900s, cricket was played there.

Since 2014 football has been played on the site, with FC St Helens based there.

An application, sent to the council by FC St Helens chairman Steve Leather, says plans include for the "positioning of a new 50 seater stand" and "positioning of a new 50 standing cover stand".

Plans add "the site use remains the same" with "a sports ground for football" and . a "community hub for adult and youth football" and for "community projects".

This Dentons Green site is of great historical significance in the town, being the headquarters of St Helens Cricket Club for many years and the home of Saints until their move to Knowsley Road for the 1890-91 season.
