POLICE have given an update after two men were arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm after an alleged assault in St Helens town centre.

As reported by the Star yesterday, a man was found unconscious on Henry Street, which is a short distance from the Landings Roundabout.

The man, in his 50s, suffered a cut to the back of his head and a suspected fractured eye socket and was taken to hospital.

His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.

A police spokeswoman said in an update today, Monday, that the man is in a stable condition and is due to be leaving hospital.

Detectives have appealed for witnesses after they were called to the scene at 11.50pm on Saturday night.

Following CCTV inquiries two men, aged 26 and 27, were arrested on suspicion of inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent and taken to custody.

A Merseyside spokeswoman confirmed that the men have since been bailed.

After the assault, Detective Inspector Louise Johnson said a number of lines of enquiry to “establish what has taken place in the lead up to the man being injured”.

She added: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Henry Street at around 11.50pm (on Saturday) night who saw anything or has any information which could assist with our investigation to contact us.”
