A CASUALTY was cut out of a vehicle by rescue crews following a crash this afternoon.

Emergency services rushed to Sherdley Road, in Sutton Heath, near to its junction with Elephant Lane, shortly before 4pm on Tuesday, February 27 following a crash involving a car and a van.

Police, ambulance and fire and rescue crews attended the scene.

Crews had to remove a door and roof from one of the vehicles to remove a casualty.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that emergency services are currently on Sherdley Road, in St Helens, following a road traffic collision involving a car and van.

"It was reported at around 3.55pm and a road closure is currently in place while emergency services deal with the incident."

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service spokesman added: "Crews were called to a road traffic collision (RTC) on Sherdley Road, St. Helens, this afternoon.

"Crews were alerted at 4.03pm and on scene at 4.09pm, with two fire engines and the Search and Rescue Team in attendance. Crews arrived to find two (vehicles) involved in a collision, with both vehicles on all four wheels.

"One driver was out of the vehicle before the fire service arrived, the other remained trapped in the vehicle conscious and breathing for medical reasons.

"Crews stabilised the vehicle and removed a door and roof from the vehicle to remove the casualty quickly into the care of paramedics for assessment and transfer to hospital."

Live traffic tracker INRIX stated as of 5pm: "Sherdley Road both ways partially blocked, slow traffic due to accident at B5204 Elton Head Road. Near to Platt's Field."
