TWO men have been arrested near to the East Lancashire Road following a police pursuit.  

The suspects were detained this afternoon, Tuesday, after the chase which commenced as a VW Passat failed to stop for police on Blackbrook Road.

A pursuit was launched, with two suspects eventually detained off the East Lancs, near to Haydock Island after the car had come to a stop.

Police dogs and a helicopter were called to assist during the pursuit.

A Merseyside Police spokesman said: "We can confirm that two men have been arrested following a pursuit in St Helens and Haydock this afternoon, Tuesday, February 27.

"At around 1.05pm, a VW Passat failed to stop for police in Blackbrook Road.

"A pursuit was authorised and with the assistance of the National Police Air Service (NPAS) helicopter and dog patrols, two men were detained off the East Lancs Road near to Haydock Island after the car came to a stop.

"They have been arrested on suspicion of various offences and taken into custody."

Police have not yet confirmed the offences the arrested men are suspected of.
