A COMMUNITY Christmas Market has been postponed due to today's wet and windy weather.

With a Met Office yellow warning in place, the Billinge Christmas Market, which was due to be held today, has been rearranged.

The event will now take place next Saturday, December 16 at The Masons Arms, on Carr Mill Road.

It will be the third staging of the event, which is run by the community and for the community, and was started as a way of helping local businesses, charities and individuals following the Covid pandemic. The event relies completely on volunteers and donations to help make the market a success.

Billinge resident and organiser Stephanie Fry announced the event's rescheduling yesterday.

In a post on the Billinge Community Market Facebook page, she said: "I’m absolutely gutted to say that given our yellow weather warning for wind and rain tomorrow (Saturday), we’ve decided that it’s simply not safe for the Christmas Market to go ahead.

"It has been postponed until next Saturday, December 16 with the looking very pleasant for that day, fingers crossed it remains that way.

"I’m so very sorry for the inconvenience caused, but we must put people’s safety first. I dearly hope that you will all be able to join us on the 16th instead, 12-4pm at The Masons Arms."

The event will raise money for Teardrops Homelessness charity in St Helens, as well as Billinge Tenants and Residents Association.

Stephanie said: "We encourage visitors to use public transport or walk to the event, or parking is available just a few minutes walk away at Barrows Farm. All Market information and updates are available on the dedicated Facebook page 'Billinge Community Market.'

"In order to keep this event completely free, we require help and support from the wider community. If you would like to volunteer on the day, or if you can donate to our charity appeal, please get in touch with myself at s.a.fry@hotmail.co.uk or on 07542 499261, and for any other general Christmas Market enquiries."
