A DAD-OF-FOUR has spoken of his admiration for the community after the tragic loss of a beloved family pet.

The tragedy happened on the school run on Monday, October 9, as Teddy the Shih Tzu cross was "spooked" and broke free from his lead on Crow Lane, close to Newton-le-Willows library.

Before owner David Ward could grab his pet pooch, the four-year-old dog ran into the main road and was sadly run over.

With a dog owner's worst nightmare coming true, the devastated David said that he was immediately comforted by the community who came to his aid after the incident.

David, from Newton, said: "As soon as it happened, neighbours were coming out of their houses to help, and offering me a blanket and even some brandy.

"People started pulling over at the side of the road too and offering to help me take Teddy to the vets - the whole road basically stopped to help me."

Describing Teddy as a "cheeky, playful, and loving" pup who was "part of the family", David said it has been a "heartbreaking" time for the family.

Despite the tragic loss of a beloved pet, David said that the family have taken much solace from the huge support they have had from the community in Newton, from those who assisted him at the time of the accident to the hundreds who have offered support and consolation online.

David added: "The community has been brilliant with us, and it's been a bit overwhelming to be honest.

"I can't believe how many people have helped and supported us, as I don't even know most of the people who have contacted me.

"But I think there is a big community in Newton and a lot of dog walkers so the support really has helped."
