A MAN who was arrested following a “serious assault” at a pub in Newton-le-Willows on Saturday evening has been released on bail.

Officers were called to the Pied Bull on High Street at around 9pm on December 17 to reports of two men being assaulted.

One man in his 50s was taken to hospital with head and facial injuries.

Meanwhile, the second man, in his 30s, suffered minor facial injuries.

Following inquiries, a 25-year-old man, from Golborne, was arrested on suspicion of grievous bodily harm with intent and was taken to a police station for questioning.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman confirmed that the suspect has since been released on bail.

Detectives issued an appeal for information after the assault.

Detective Inspector Lawry Simm said: “Our inquiries are in the early stages but we initially believe that this incident took place both inside and outside of the premises, and has resulted in serious injuries for one of the victims. 

“Forensic, CCTV and witness inquiries are ongoing but if you saw or captured anything, be it witness accounts, CCTV or dashcam when passing the pub, let us know and we will take action.
