STUDENTS at a specialist college for young adults with autism are teaming up with a local cricket club to deliver food parcels.

LEAP college in Newton-le-Willows have partnered with Earlestown Cricket Club to collect food parcels for St John’s Church.

Gemma Sutton, class teacher at LEAP college, said: "As part of our employment qualifications we have worked alongside Earlestown cricket club for a number of years.

"This year we have supported the captain of the club, Karl Allan, to buy and deliver food items for the local foodbank at St Johns Church.

"Our students have expressed how happy they are to be involved in this type of charity work to help people less fortunate than themselves and have extended this work to the Hope Centre in St Helens where they collect food from the main supermarkets, deliver the food to the Hope Centre, add BB dates and then pack into crates.

"This year Earlestown Cricket Club have invited LEAP 1 students and staff to join them in their foodbank collection on Friday.

"LEAP staff and students are thoroughly looking forward to be supporting such an important event."

John Allan, Etown Chairman, added: "We hope that by opening the pavilion from 10am-6pm, local people who want to donate but don’t know where to take items can come and leave items with us to take to St John’s with the whole collection.

"Christmas will be tough for many families in our area, and we want to do what we can to help."

The Foodbank Open Day will take place at the cricket club’s pavilion tomorrow between 10am-6pm.
