A MOTORCYCLIST who was taken to hospital with a head injury after a crash has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving.

A motorbike and a van were involved in a collision on New Street, Sutton, on Friday evening, June 17.

Emergency services attended the scene following the crash and a road closure was in place.

The van driver and bike rider were both taken to hospital, police say.

The motorcyclist, a 36-year-old man from Clock Face, was arrested on suspicion of driving while over the prescribed limit for alcohol.

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "At around 7.50pm officers were called to a report of a collision on New Street in St Helens involving a white van and a motorcycle.

"The driver of the van was taken to hospital after the collision."

She added: "Officers arrested a 36-year-old man from Clock Face, St Helens, on suspicion of driving whilst over the prescribed limit for alcohol.

"He was also taken to hospital after he sustained a head injury.

"New Street was closed whilst emergency services were at the scene and the vehicles were removed."

A North West Ambulance spokesman added: "We responded to an RTC (road traffic collision) involving a motorbike, following a call at 7.46pm.

"The rider was taken to Whiston Hospital with a head injury."

He was taken to hospital by road, although the air ambulance did attend the scene.
