CCTV footage showed black oil being poured all over the display by two hooded vandals.

A spokesman for the company said it had spent the past two years working on the display, which had just been finalised.

"The police came in to investigate in response to the triggered alarm, the culprits had disappeared by the time they had arrived," he said.

"I am truly disappointed and I really don’t know what they had to gain from doing this. It is senseless.

"I am just upset, we had just finished the display and had just got it right."
