POLICE attended a pub after a customer was aggressive towards staff and smashed glasses after being asked to wear a face mask.

Officers were called to The Windle pub on Hard Lane on Saturday evening (June 5) to the disturbance.

It was reported the customer, a man, had been "aggressive and smashed glasses outside the venue".

A spokesperson for the pub said the customer had been abusive following a polite request from staff to wear a face mask.

They added the customer would not leave the premises and shouted "Covid does not exist".

A Merseyside Police spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that officers attended an incident in St Helens on Saturday, June 5.

"At around 7.30pm, police were called to the Windle Pub in Hard Lane after reports a male customer had been aggressive and smashed glasses outside the venue before making off.

"Police attended and escorted a small group of people out of the venue, who were co-operative.

"No-one was hurt in the incident."

In a statement posted on Facebook after the incident, The Windle pub said: "We do not condone nor tolerate this behaviour, we are still in a pandemic and we still have to conform to the rules and also safe guarding our customers."
