PLANS to turn a former music shop into a restaurant and wine bar have been granted permission.
A planning application had been submitted to St Helens Council seeking permission to transform the former Peter Darwin Music store at 19-21 George Street.
The plans sought to turn the ground and first floor of the building into a venue and to construct a rear extension.
The building, which falls within the George Street conservation area of St Helens town centre, has been out of use since 2018.
The application stated: “The proposed change of use, shop frontage improvements and rear extension will provide additional restaurant offer to this part of the town centre, increasing its vibrancy and vitality".
“The improved appearance of the building will enhance the character of the conservation area.
“The proposals therefore support the aims and objectives of the borough, and accord with both national and local planning policy.”

The plans have been approved by the council planning department.
A planning officer report said: "The proposal would reuse the building which has been vacant for a number of years and contribute to the economic vitality of the area.
"The proposal amends the existing shopfront which can also be seen as enhancing the character of the conservation area".
The proposed establishment will add the mix of venues in the area, which includes the restaurant Sabroso, La Casa Vieja and Ba’bursi.
Two pubs, the Royal Alfred and The George, are also nearby.
