WHILE Saints will take centre stage for the Challenge Cup final at Wembley, there will be another St Helens presence out on the Wembley pitch tomorrow.

The traditional Year seven final of the annual Warners Champion Schools competition takes place before the cup final.

And among the officials for the clash between Great Sankey, of Warrington and Standish High, of Wigan, is 16-year-old Mackenzie Maddison who will be a touch judge.

Meanwhile, one of the in-goal judges is Ryan Cox, also from St Helens.

Mackenzie, from Haydock, suffered a serious spinal injury while playing rugby for Newton Storm.

Despite the injury ending his chances of playing the game he loves, Mackenzie has since got involved in officiating.

"I'm excited, it's a good opportunity for young and aspiring officials," said Mackenzie, who also got to be an in-goal judge in last year's Year seven final at Wembley.

"It's an overwhelming experience and a very exciting day. It is a prestigious cup and the whole history of it is amazing.

"It was great last year looking at the home of football, standing there as a 15-year-old and looking out at the stands, it was a real experience."

Mackenzie says his ambition is to be an official at the top of the professional game.

"It is good, there are lots of ups and downs and it can be a lonely place but I really enjoy it. I like the sport and it's good to be involved in.

"I watch it quite regularly, as many games as I can and don't just watch the games but watch the referees and try and learn and and get pointers. There are some good things you can pick up.

"The goal is to one day go back to Wembley in the main game.

"It's good, there are six of us out of the whole of the UK and there's two from St Helens, the other four are from Yorkshire. We'll be representing Lancashire and especially St Helens."
