ST HELENS Council’s decision to review their intention to close several libraries within the borough and cancel the proposed closing date of October 31 will come as welcome news not only to library users but library staff whose jobs were presumably at some risk.
Along with my wife, I have been a regular user of Rainhill Library, which I’m given to understand is the third most used library in the borough.
I would be extremely disappointed, not to say angry, were it to close.
Can you imagine Tesco for instance closing their third most used store?
I have always considered the council’s approach to library closures ill thought out; now it looks as if following legal advice, proper procedure and consultation has not been followed. Hence the postponement.
Let’s hope this decision is not just a stay of execution and all libraries threatened with closure will remain open.
Brian Renshall, Rainhill
