IN response to the dogs in the letters in December which called for dogs to be banned from St Helens Cemetery.
As a visitor to our beautiful cemetery who has loved ones resting there, and as a dog walker, I can only agree with some of this.
To simply ban dog walkers en masse is a lazy way to remedy the issue and punishes responsible owners who wish to visit loved ones in company with a dog who may well have belonged to that loved one.
Surely better enforcement of existing rules is what’s needed in the first instance. I also believe that enforcement should extend to, and maybe start with, those who decide to use the cemetery as a racing track.
I have witnessed cars travelling in excess of 20mph as well as vehicles mounting grassed areas near to graves. I find this more unacceptable and disrespectful.
