UNLIKE some Star readers who have written to the Opinion page, I’m glad both St Helens MPs support a second EU referendum with a Remain option.

Brexit was sold as solving Britain’s problems by “taking back control”.

In reality it surrenders control either to the EU under May’s deal or to Donald Trump under the ERG “hard Brexit” plan.

May’s deal would begin with a 21 month “implementation period”, possibly extended to three years during which Britain would be bound by all EU rules but no longer share in making them.

EU migration and payments to the EU would continue as now while Britain would be unable to implement any trade deals with third countries.

The ERG alternative would centre on a trade deal with America effectively written by Donald Trump without real British input which would certainly give Trump a veto over any British trade deal with China, such as he has already imposed on Canada and Mexico.

Also Britain’s NHS would be opened to American private investment. Whatever form Brexit takes, immigration, especially illegal immigration, would continue and possibly increase as most immigration originates outside the EU and the present EU arrangements for returning illegal non EU migrants to other EU countries through which they had passed would automatically lapse.

Time to let people too young to vote in 2016 have their say.
