THE letter about disposing of nappies that appeared in the November 22 edition of the Star couldn’t be more misguided.
According to various reports commissioned by the Environmental Agency, disposable nappies account for £2 billion a year ending up in our landfills where they emit methane, a greenhouse gas.
They can take up to 500 years to decompose. They create about 400,000 tonnes of waste yearly in the UK and cost the average council taxpayer nearly £70 annually.
Parents should not be encouraged to use more disposable nappies by providing more bins, but rather they should use reusable nappies which are far less harmful to the environment.
Failure to do this will only further pollute the planet we’re currently trying to preserve.

Thatto Heath
