LET us be proud of our town's name, Newton-le-Willows, instead of shortening it to Newton.
There are about 22 other places called Newton throughout England.
Out of interest, there is also another Newton-le-Willows in Richmondshire, North Yorkshire.
Our charming High Street, having a village feel to it, complements our town’s descriptive and apt name, “Newton-le-Willows.”
I understand our town many years ago was called Newton-in-Makerfield; I believe the town was renamed Newton-le-Willows in 1939.
When voting, we have “Newton Ward” and “Earlestown Ward.”
I have spoken to councillor Jeannie Bell who was brought up in Newton-le-Willows.
I understand some time ago, she also raised this matter by way of some kind of survey, I believe it clearly showed the majority who took part, preferred the name Newton-le-Willows.
Newton-le-Willows can be proud of quite a number of famous people connected with this historical town, the list is amazing.
Newton-le-Willows can be proud of the very strong connection with railways, having two of the oldest railway stations.
I would like to see our town’s great name, Newton-le-Willows, highlighted more often instead of just “Newton.”
Save and protect our great town’s great name.
