TOWN turned in a marvellous display for 55 minutes to lead Stockport Town 3-1 then allowed their opponents back into the game.

Ultimately, they were punished by a 90th minute equaliser their visitors barely deserved.

It was, in many ways, a reflection of the way their season has progressed, losing and drawing matches from winning positions, which may yet result in their winning the wooden spoon at the foot of the First Division table.

The game started in sparkling fashion, with leading scorer Shaun Brady netting twice in the opening 15 minutes.

The first goal came from a crisp finish from the corner of the penalty box.

Stockport equalised with a precision strike from Ruben Goncalves de Abreu, but Brady restored the home side’s lead on the quarter-hour.

Ten minutes into the second half, Liam Diggle connected with a half-volley six yards out to make it 3-1.

Herve Sezerano pulled one back and seemingly inevitably, Treyvon Simpson, tapped in from close range with virtually the last kick of the match.

Town visit Cheadle Town on Saturday and Alsager Town on Monday – both tough matches – St. Helens could yet suffer the ignominy of the award of the wooden spoon for the first time since 1956.
