SAINTS boss Paul Rowley has confirmed that he has been interviewed for the vacant coaching job ahead of this autumn’s Rugby League World Cup to be held in Australia.

The RFL are seeking a coach to take the national side on a short-term basis for the tournament, with the vacancy arising following the exit of Shaun Wane after last autumn’s Ashes whitewash.

Leeds boss Brad Arthur has also confirmed this week that he has been interviewed but other high-profile rugby league names have also been linked to the post, including Sam Burgess, Brian McDermott and former national coach Steve McNamara.

If successful, the job would not impact on Rowley’s role at Saints – and he is currently at the start of a three-year contract at the BrewDog Stadium.

Rowley has World Cup experience, having played three times in the tournament held in Britain in 2000.

He said: “I have put my hand up for the job and it is certainly a passion and a goal that I would like to fulfil.

“I am in the mix, and I think everybody has been named who has been up there and I am one of them. I am in there as well.

“I have sat in front of the panel and they were fantastic and really fair.

“I am pleased that everything was really good and I am grateful for the opportunity to have an interview, so we will see what happens.”
